Videberg Kraft selects Rolls-Royce SMR as its supplier for new nuclear power in Sweden

With the support of its owners Vattenfall and Industrikraft, Videberg Kraft works purposefully to enable new nuclear power in Sweden, with a first reactor in operation earliest by the mid-2030s. The process of evaluating and selecting a final supplier, from more than 70 alternatives at the outset, has been under way for over three years.

“Overall, the Board’s assessment is that Rolls-Royce SMR is the supplier that can give Videberg Kraft the best pre-requisites for delivering a successful project. The reactor, a pressurised water reactor (PWR), is the same type used at Ringhals today and is a well-proven technology. More-over, Rolls-Royce SMR has a commercially attractive contractual set-up,” says Anna Borg, Board member of Videberg Kraft and President and CEO of Vattenfall.

“Rolls-Royce SMR offers an efficient and industrialised concept that reduces the risk of delays. Videberg Kraft, together with Rolls-Royce SMR, is now paving the way for a new nuclear power on the Värö peninsula – something that would not have been possible without a historically unique collaboration between Swedish industry and the energy sector,” says Tom Erixon, Board member of Videberg Kraft and Industrikraft, and President and CEO of Alfa Laval.

By choosing to move forward with Rolls-Royce SMR, Videberg Kraft and its owner companies also become part of a European programme, where we can benefit from shared experience,” says Desirée Comstedt, acting CEO of Videberg Kraft.

Facts:

• Three new reactors with an output of 470 MW per reactor can produce around 12 TWh of fossil-free electricity per year, which is an important addition in southern Sweden.
• The concept is based on modularised manufacturing, where each component is delivered in full to the site and then assembled.
• The reactor technology is a pressurised water reactor, the same technology currently used at Ringhals.
• Rolls-Royce SMR is a British company. Its principal owner, Rolls-Royce, has long been a supplier of nuclear-powered submarines, technology on which Rolls-Royce SMR has developed further.
