Sweden’s first new nuclear project in over 40 years 

In December 2025, Videberg Kraft handed in an application to the Swedish Government for state aid and risk-sharing in an investment in the new nuclear project on the Värö peninsula next to the Ringhals nuclear power plant on the West coast of Sweden – thereby taking the next step on the road to realising new nuclear power in Sweden for the first time in over 40 years.

The Down Selection 

Since the beginning of the project, more than 75 potential suppliers have been evaluated – both conventional and modular reactor designs. 

As part of the down-selecting process, suppliers were evaluated from an array of different parameters pertaining to the projects ability to successfully develop and deliver 1 500 MW at the Värö peninsula. 

In June 2026, Videberg Kraft announced that it had chosen Rolls-Royce SMR as its supplier of modular reactors.

The Technology

Like all nuclear power technologies, modular reactors generate electricity through the controlled fission of uranium atoms inside a reactor core.

During fission, uranium atoms split and release large amounts of heat. This heat is absorbed by water, which serves both to cool the reactor and to moderate the nuclear reaction. The thermal energy is then used to produce steam, which drives turbines connected to generators, thereby producing fossil free electricity.

Most nuclear power plants, including those operating in Sweden today, use so called light water reactor technology, primarily in the form of Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) or Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs). 

In a BWR, steam is produced directly in the reactor vessel and fed to the turbine, whereas in a PWR the reactor heat is transferred to a separate water circuit, where steam is generated to drive the turbine. Compared to traditional reactors, modular reactors are intended to have larger portion of pre-fabricated components, to be assembled on-site. This means that the technology offers considerably shorter construction times, is scalable and needs less on-site labour than traditional reactors – which in turn drives cost savings.

The Site

The Värö peninsula on the West coast of Sweden was in an early stage identified as the most fitting location for new nuclear power in Sweden. 

Its location, in the southern parts of the country, was one clear advantage. As Sweden is a long country spanning north-to-south, the grid and power generation has its own challenges. With the hydro power located in the north and the wind power distributed, electricity prices have over time been higher in the south compared to the north. With new generation capacity coming online in the south-west part of Sweden, both consumers and high intensive industries would benefit from lower and more predictable energy prices 

The site at the Värö Peninsula is particularly suitable to be able to tap into the nuclear knowledge and experience accumulated at the existing Ringhals plants, as well as to make use of common infrastructure such as e.g. grid connection. 

The continued support from the local community is important for not only the project’s success, but also the operation of the plant over its long lifetime.
